An artist of extraordinary abstract vision, Makiko Nakamura's works
depict the micaceous flow of light and color across adjacent cells on a grid.
With the use of up to fifty layers of acrylic per canvas, Nakamura
meticulously renders minute variations on pattern within an overall scheme
of similarity and repetition. Her pieces, however, far from result in lifeless
iteration. Inspired by a fascination with the forests of Japan,
Nakamura's art displays an affinity for the organic -- the veinous texture of
leaves; the fluid strata of living cells. A daughter of Gifu City, the
papermaking center of Japan, her work recalls as well the fibrous delicacy of
traditional Japanese paper.
